Part time: Circulation Clerk/Outreach Assistant

The Pendleton County Public Library is seeking a creative, enthusiastic, friendly, and highly-engaged person to fill the position of Circulation Clerk/Outreach Assistant! This is a part-time position responsible for a variety of tasks within the Library, including but not limited to circulation, public service, and assisting with outreach services by selecting materials for homebound patrons and driving the outreach vehicle as needed, all to help fulfill our mission to connect our community, explore the world, imagine what can be, and create.

High school diploma, public service experience, and computer skills required. Employment will be contingent on a satisfactory background check, valid Kentucky driver’s license, and satisfactory driving record. Starting Salary $13.00 per hour

Position Title: Outreach Assistant                                                         Classification 2 

Distinguishing Features of the Class: Loosely defined work assignments with minimal supervision. Exercises a moderate degree of discretion within general guidelines, practices, and procedures. Limited supervisory responsibilities. May assist with training and monitoring the work of others. May take on project leadership role within the Library and may represent the Library to the community. May assist in the development, improvement, and implementation of policies, practices, and services. Conceptualizes and solves general problems. Develops and implements activities to achieve desired results. Has and is expected to make use of specialized and/or technical expertise. Job performance skills are learned through work experience, library education, and on-the-job training. 

Overview: Supports the Library’s mission by [1] ensuring that customers receive excellent public service, [2] assisting with and providing outreach services with the outreach vehicle, and [3] carrying out public service, circulation, and other library tasks as assigned. 

Immediate Supervisor:                                       Assistant Director

Positions Directly Supervised: None, but may oversee specific tasks performed by others 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Organization-Wide Expectations:

  • Follows established Library and personnel policies, procedures, and work standards
  • Provides exceptional customer service assisting library patrons, staff, and volunteers pleasantly and professionally
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Presents the Library and its services in a positive manner
  • Regularly monitors library communication venues, including but not limited to employee email, staff bulletin boards, and the intranet
  • Assists in the use, maintenance, and security of Library building, property, and equipment
  • Uses the library’s automated system to check materials in/out, process holds and interlibrary loans, register new cardholders, collect fines/fees, answer inquiries, etc.
  • Performs data entry tasks, including entering library database updates
  • Shelves library materials and keeps the shelves neat and orderly
  • Rearranges or shifts books or materials as needed
  • Assists in keeping the library neat and orderly
  • Assists in opening and closing routines
  • Assists in the physical processing and maintenance of library materials
  • Assists with library displays, including maintaining display areas
  • Assists with programs, including set up and take down
  • Assists customers in the use of technology available in the library, including basic troubleshooting of microfilm, photocopier, and computer problems
  • Provides inquiry, reference, and reader’s advisory assistance to patrons in person, on the telephone, and/or electronically, including Library social media and email accounts, using print and digital resources
  • Performs related work as required and assigned for the efficient and effective operation of the Library

Job-Specific Expectations:

  • Drives the outreach vehicle and keeps vehicle clean and in good working order as requested
  • Assists with selection and delivery of books and materials to homebound patrons and off-site locations
  • Assists with outreach programs by participating in community events, including, but not limited to, school events, fairs, and parades
  • Keeps statistics on outreach programming and outreach services and reports/summarizes outcomes of programs as requested
  • Assists in Library promotion, including promotion of outreach programs and services
  • May work collaboratively with community members, groups, and organizations to create effective partnerships
  • May train other staff as needed
  • May perform activities related to the retrieval of overdue materials, including preparing/sending notices, checking shelves, and responding to questions about overdue notices

QUALIFICATIONS 

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study, preferred.
  • Relevant work experience in a public library or public service setting.
  • High level of comfort with standard office software, including Microsoft Office products, email, and internet usage.
  • Valid Kentucky driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.

Manual dexterity to manipulate library materials. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist, or lifting as required to file documents or store materials throughout the work day. Ability to do repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy. Employee may need to carry, push, pull or lift up to 30 pounds. Proper lifting techniques required. Push and pull fully loaded (50-100 pounds) carts. Visual acuity sufficient to read primarily typed or printed text in a variety of font sizes and styles. Handling a large vehicle in various levels of traffic and on narrow and/or winding roads.

Working Environment: Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. Involves various and unpredictable driving conditions which are affected by weather, other drivers, potential traffic hazards, and changing road conditions. Noise level is usually moderate. Work may be performed in a variety of settings and locations. Possible exposure to dust and other allergens.

Work Schedule: This position requires working scheduled daytime, evening, Saturday, and Sunday hours.

QUALIFICATIONS 

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma, or equivalent, and public service experience
  • High level of comfort with technology
  • Valid Kentucky driver’s license
